C-section overhang

I know too many women who have been led to believe there's nothing that can be done about their C-section overhang or shelf. I bet, if you're reading this, that you're one of them!

You've probably been told "there's nothing you can do" or "it's too late now". These phrases not only get in your head, but they also remove any possibility of hope! They break you and leave you feeling stuck in a body and way of life that you're forever going to be unhappy with.

Here's the thing: none of this is true. These careless statements come from a place where people have a lack of understanding of what the body is able to achieve and a lack of knowledge around C-section rehab.

Understanding what is behind the route cause of a C-section Overhang is what will help you to see that there is hope! There are many possible causes, but today I want to start by taking you through the top 5 myths that will help me to explain and you to understand the big why behind your overhang and how to resolve it.

THE MYTHS

1. It's Too Late

It's hard to pin down exactly where this myth stems from, I think. So, I'll take you through my mind as I unpick the possibility. Let's think about what society tells us and shows us. For too many years, we've seen images and videos of 'old' people struggling. We've heard phrases like "you're over the hill", "the clock is ticking". You've probably seen and heard family members moan about their various ailments once they've reached a certain age. The medical services even tell us that our bones will get brittle, our minds will fail us, and we're more likely to struggle as we age. The list of background 'proof' goes on, and yes, you can sit there and say, But we know age makes us weaker. But what if this is only the case because we live a very different life from what we should be if we were to thrive?

If you look at truly indigenous societies like The Hadza (Hadzabe) of Tanzania or incredible people like Ernestine Shepherd. Then it is clear to see that the issue is not age itself, but the lifestyle of the Western world, which is sedentary, full of highly processed food and a ton of stress!

And now here's where I link this to a C-section overhang; a stuck scar, which is one of the MAIN causes of an overhang, happens due to lack of overall movement and functional movement. Our lifestyle doesn't encourage us to get mobile and move through a full range of functional movement on a regular basis, and so we stay stuck.

If you want to get rid of your overhang, incorporating more diverse movement and moving through full ranges of motion could greatly increase your chances of reducing that overhang!

2. You've Had Too Many C-sections

I can see where the thought process behind this one stems from, but there's no truth in it whatsoever, and I KNOW this to be true now! I've seen my clients disprove this theory time and time again!

The theory behind it, though, comes from the fact that the more C-sections you have, the more scar tissue you have. That's true, yes. But does that mean you're stuck with it, holding you back? No!

I used to think it would at least mean it would take longer to heal, but again, the mums I've worked with have proven this to be untrue as well! Time depends entirely on the person, the amount of work you put in and not on how many C-sections you've had.

What does the trick is a very gentle, light touch approach to scar tissue release. This allows you to get deeper and deeper into the layers of scar tissue all around the scar and belly until eventually you soften it all and the scar releases.

3. There's Nothing You Can Do

Well, I'm sure you can gather what I'm gonna say to this one... B0((%H1T

There is so much you can and should do! Here's a list:

  • Scar massage

  • 360-degree breathing

  • Pressure management (proper deep core and pelvic floor breathing)

  • Deep core activation

  • Lower ab activation

  • Hip mobility

  • Lymphatic drainage

  • Cupping

  • Gua Sha

  • Posture re-balancing

  • Emotional healing

  • Stress management

Following a plan that combines all this in a manageable and progressive manner is what pulls all this together and gets your body back all that has been missing and holding you back.

4. If You're Overweight, You Can't Get Rid Of It

overweight

This is definitely not true, but the reason people think it is because it's common to have a bit of a hanging belly if you're overweight. I have worked with women of all shapes and sizes who came to me because they had a shelf/overhang that they hated, and they ALL saw improvements, even those who are carrying extra weight.

The only time I suppose we can say this statement is true is if you want to COMPLETELY get rid of it. In that case, if you're carrying extra weight, you will need to lose that to completely shift the overhang. But if all you want is to reduce it, then don't worry about the weight!

5. You Don't Have An Ab Separation

ab separation

You may have had your core checked or you checked for ab separation yourself, but guess what, as a C-section mum, it doesn't even matter. Now I bet you're confused 😆ok, so the thing is, as a mum who's had 1 or more C-sections, you have been given an ab separation!

Whether it's technically healed or not, it doesn't make any difference because the surgeon cut you vertically down the Linea Alba, which is exactly where ab separation happens, and because you were cut there, you now have a weakened Linea Alba.

So, no matter what, you should be doing work that you would do to heal a Diastasis Recti (Ab separation) because otherwise you are very likely to be forcing pressure (accidentally, of course) into your lower belly and this will stop you from being able to ever flatten a shelf or overhang.

So now you know there are a number of reasons to be doing C-section rehab, and no limiting belief, excuse, or myth needs to stop you because no matter what, you can ALWAYS improve an overhang.
